VISA Card History

In September of 1958, Bank of America (BOFA) launched its credit card program called BankAmeriCard. The idea was to create the world’s first all-purpose credit card to replace the already existing revolving credit system, which was very ineffective due to customers having to have a card for each type of bills. 60,000 unsolicited credit cards were sent out to customers and became a great success for BOFA.

Many smaller banks had already attempted to create a similar credit card, but had all been unsuccessful due to lack of resources to properly promote and execute the product.

BOFA started out by only operating in the state of California, but in 1965 they started to do agreements with other banks outside of California. BOFA were not allowed to expand directly into other states, due to federal restrictions that were not lifted until 1994.

The BOFA credit card was outlawed in America in 1970, due to financial chaos caused by the large amount of cards distributed among the American population. Instead the various BOFA credit card issuers took control of the program and created National BankAmeriCard Inc (NBI), an independent corporation who were left in charge of managing, developing and promoting the BankAmericard system inside America. Bank of America continued to create and support international licenses themselves, getting licenses in 15 countries by 1972. In 1974 they created the company IBANCO to manage the international program of BOFA.

In 1976 the directors of IBANCO decided to bring together the international networks into a single network, to have better control of the product. The international networks became known as Visa International and the national card under the NBI Corporation, would be known as Visa. The name Visa was chosen by the company’s founder Dee Hock, who thought that the name was easy to recognize as well as universal accepted.

Since then, people all over the world have known the BOFA credit card as Visa and has become the most popular credit card with more than 200 countries using it.

VISA Card and Online Gambling

Visa cards have always been the main credit card used to gamble online. Before the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) was passed by the American Congress in 2006, American friendly online casinos accepted Visa as a deposit and withdrawal method. After the bill was passed, American friendly casinos were no longer allowed to accept deposits from American players and it put a stop to using Visa as a deposit and withdrawal method.

Almost all online casinos accept Visa card to deposit and withdraw. Among the mayor ones accepting it are casino networks like Netent, Microgaming, Playtech, Real Time Gaming and Amaya. When you play on one of these casino networks, you can deposit and withdraw with your Visa card without any problems and start to play immediately.

US Friendly Casinos and VISA

After the passing of the UIGEA bill in 2006, American friendly casinos were no longer allowed to accept deposits from American players. Despite this, many casinos continued to operate on the American market. Because of the terms and conditions change from Mastercard not allowing merchants to do cash outs to Mastercards, Visa quickly became the most popular credit card to deposit and withdraw with for Americans. Online casinos such as Real Time Gaming (RTG) and its partners still accept Visa deposits and withdrawals today.

Visa is one of the most popular payment methods used by players to deposit and withdraw. With most casino players not using an e-wallet such as Skrill and Neteller, Visa will continue to be the main choice for players. Visa is a safe, fast and reliable way to deposit and withdraw with and it will continue to be so.
