With a gross gaming revenue (GGR) of €123.4 billion ($133.5 billion) in 2024—a 5% rise from the year before—the European gambling industry saw tremendous expansion. The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) and H2 Gambling Capital collaborated to produce the most recent market report, which contains this data. Key insights from the report include: Lottery games remained the most significant revenue generator at €38 billion ($41 billion), with the majority (€30.9 billion/$33.4 billion) from land-based channels. Casino games earned €30 billion ($32.4 billion), predominantly online (€21.5 billion/$23.3 billion). Gaming machines contributed €24.9 billion ($26.9 billion), maintaining a fully land-based presence. Sports and event betting saw revenues of €20.1 billion ($21.7 billion), with online betting accounting for €13.7 billion ($14.8 billion). European countries displayed varying levels of online gambling adoption. Sweden (68.3%), Finland (68.1%), and Denmark led the continent in online market penetration. In contrast, Spain lagged with only 14.2% of its gambling revenue from online channels. The UK remained Europe’s largest gambling market, generating €30.8 billion ($33 billion) in revenue. Italy (€25.5 billion/$27.5 billion), France (€17.8 billion/$19.2 billion), and Germany (€17.7 billion/$19.1 billion) followed closely. Looking forward, EGBA Secretary General Maarten Haijer highlighted the sector's momentum: “Europe’s gambling market showed steady growth in 2024. While land-based gambling remains dominant and continues to grow in absolute terms, online channels are showing stronger momentum, driven by changing consumer preferences and technological advancement.” He further emphasized expectations for the online sector, stating: "Looking ahead to 2025, we expect online gambling to cross the significant 40% market share milestone, with this trend projected to continue in the coming years as online gambling is expected to approach parity with land-based gambling by 2029." The report anticipates that Europe’s total gambling market will expand to €127.7 billion ($138.2 billion) in 2025 and could reach €149.2 billion ($161.3 billion) by 2029, with online gambling leading this growth.
