According to the North Carolina State Lottery Commission’s most recent sports betting statistics for December, gamblers wagered $613.1 million. Even though this is a noteworthy amount, the state saw a minor decline of roughly $25 million in comparison to the statistics from November and October.
Players in North Carolina collected more than $590 million in winnings last month. Promotional wagering revenue for December reached an impressive $16.3 million. The state also recorded a gross wagering revenue of $35.7 million for the month.
However, tax contributions from sports betting saw a decline. In December, the state received $6.4 million in taxes, which is less than half of November’s tax revenue. This drop highlights the challenges and fluctuations in the early stages of North Carolina’s legal sports betting market.
Joining more than 35 other states that have legalized sports betting, North Carolina formally opened for business in March 2024. Eight operators received licenses from the North Carolina State Lottery Commission prior to the launch, enabling them to provide betting services throughout the state.
As the market develops, the Commission intends to provide licenses to a maximum of 12 interactive sports wagering operators. Players throughout the state will have more alternatives as a result of the opening of online, mobile, and in-person betting opportunities.
