According to the North Carolina State Lottery Commission, $623.3 million was wagered on sports in January 2025. The month’s gross wagering revenue of $74.5 million represented a noteworthy 108.7% rise over December 2024.
The handle for January is the second-highest in North Carolina over the last seven months, behind November 2024, when it was close to $638.7 million. In addition, the January 2025 handle is 1.7% higher than the December 2024 handle.
Early in 2024, sports betting was made legal for qualified residents, with an official debut date of March 11. Since then, the amount of wagering activity in the state has steadily increased.
The sharp rise in gross wagering revenue stems primarily from a decline in player winnings, which dropped by more than $20 million compared to December. Bettors in North Carolina collected approximately $568.5 million in winnings during January.
Over the past seven months, the state has generated nearly $3.69 billion in sports betting handle and more than $383 million in gross revenue. Tax proceeds from sports wagering have contributed over $68.9 million since July 2024, with January alone accounting for $13.4 million.
January’s $74.5 million in gross revenue also ranks as the second-highest in the past seven months, just behind November 2024, which brought in nearly $78.1 million.
