Sam Dessaix-Porter wins APL Million tournament

Sam Dessaix-Porter has won the prestigious APL Million tournament to claim $247,500 in cash and an $8000 Jackstar APL WSOP Monster Stack Package.

He is the second Wollongong poker player in many years to win the tournament at Star Poker Festival in Sydney.

The 25-year outplayed 1041 player to emerge victorious in the main event on Monday.

Dessaix-Porter asserted, “It has been a pretty crazy journey so far. I was out of touch from poker for last few months, but I managed to start practicing before the main event.”

“I was looking forward to a good game but wasn’t expecting a win. I just kept my head down, and then the players started dropping, and gradually the number of players kept decreasing, and I reached the final table,” he added.

He also reminisced the time when he fell sick a couple of days before the Day 2 of the event. He said, “I had the bad flu and I was sick, I couldn’t move when I woke up in the morning on Friday.”

“I took medicines and geared up to play in the tournament,” he added.

Talking about his big feat, he asserted, “It’s the biggest win of my career. I will forever remember this.”

Sam Dessaix-Porter, a Wollongong University student was even more excited as his parents were in the house to watch him play in the main event.

He also revealed in an interview that he planned on winning the four-day tournament before finishing off the final semester of his double degree in Media and Communications majoring in Marketing and Philosophy.
