The UK is home to many of Spain’s best poker players as many of them moved to the Albion so that they can continue with their online poker careers free from strict legislation back home. Players like Sergio “petgaming” Aido and Oscar “MendaLerenda” Serradell have reached the top 20 of the UK online poker rankings with Jonathan “OMGjonnyctt” Concepcion has been winning convincingly at high stakes multi-table tournaments for quite some time now.
Jose Benedi, one of Spain’s lesser-known players added $163,000 to his account as well as the title at the PokerStars Sunday Million, the largest weekly online poker tournament in the world.
Playing as “Monchonidas”, Benedí was up against 8,207 players who exchanged $215 for the chance of winning the first place prize of $246,214.05. That huge sum took a dent because once Team PokerStars Pro Christophe de Meulder busted in sixth and Gibraltar’s Groni in fifth, all of the four final players made the decision to divvy up the remaining pool, securing a minimum payout of $120,000 each. In the ensuing battle Monchonidas eventually emerged as victor and scooped an impressive $163,000.
While Monchonidas was busy winning at the Sunday Million, his fellow British-based Spaniard Alex “MrKloutt” Casals was preparing for quite a profitable Sunday. Casals managed to add $49,957.11 to his account by finishing second in the Sunday Rebuy and then took a $29,335.83 win when he walked over The T-Rex at Full Tilt Poker in in the early Sunday morning hours.
It wasn’t only Spaniards doing the damage this weekend as Ben “jenbizzle” Jones banked $21,684.00 for finishing second at the Sunday Kickoff at PokerStars. Jones was joined at that final table by “BOOM_shark85” from Sheffield who busted 8th for $3,162.25.
At 888poker, “PorkyPies29” took in $9,312 by finishing 4th in the $125,000 Mega Deep while Trigg was battling his way to a 12th place finish (worth $2,860) in the $530 buy-in Whale tournament.
