Germany’s Rene von Reden has claimed the APT Taipei Poker Classic Main Event title, winning TWD 14,413,200 ($453,960). The event was took place at the Chinese Texas Hold’em Poker Club (CTP) Asia Poker Arena, and it drew 1,991 entries, resulting in a prize pool of TWD 86,011,200 ($2,724,460). It became the biggest international poker tournament held in Taiwan.

The APT Taipei Poker Classic 2024 wrapped up with nine players competing at the final table. Each was chasing the prestigious APT gold lion trophy along with the top prize. Von Reden, a 25-year-old player from Cologne, Germany, entered the final table with one of the smallest stacks. Despite only two years of experience in live tournament poker, he managed to defeat some well-established players.

Von Reden faced strong competition, including Dhanesh Chainani, who held the chip lead, two-time APT finalist Abraham Ceesvin, three-time APT champion Jae Wook Shin, and former finalist Chih Wei Fan. Despite the tough lineup, von Reden held his ground with strategic play, along with some lucky moments.

Von Reden made a big move by knocking out Taiwan’s Chih Wei Fan, ending Fan’s chances of claiming two titles in the same series. This key elimination gave von Reden a strong boost in chips and solidified his position at the table.

His next major opponent was Dhanesh Chainani, the initial chip leader. Chainani’s ace-eight lost to von Reden’s ace-nine, thanks to a straight von Reden hit on the turn. Chainani exited in fifth place, taking home the second-best payout of his career.

Von Reden kept building his stack and eventually faced off against Macau’s Man Lok Chan in a crucial hand, pushing him into second place behind Jae Wook Shin. Meanwhile, Abraham Ceesvin took advantage, eliminating both Shin and Chan to enter heads-up play against von Reden with nearly twice the chips.

The heads-up play between von Reden and Ceesvin lasted 90 minutes, with the lead shifting between them. In the final hand, Ceesvin flopped a top pair with king-six but was up against von Reden’s turned flush. Ceesvin moved all-in on the river, and von Reden quickly called, securing the win.

Despite not converting his lead into a win, Ceesvin earned TWD 7,930,000 (~$249,760), the highest payout of his career. He accepted his defeat graciously, shaking von Reden’s hand.
