The 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) Main Event ended its registration process with a record-breaking number of 10,043 contestants, on the second day, Level 7, last Saturday. With the entries, the prize pool is capped at a staggering $93,399,900.
Expected to conclude next week, this record-setting tournament ensures the victor a grand prize of $12,100,000 – the most lucrative reward ever seen in the Main Event’s history. Predicting the eventual champion remains uncertain as the tournament hasn’t yet reached the money bubble stage. However, some prominent names are already out of the contest, including last year’s champion, Espen Jorstad.
Jorstad got knocked out of the competition on Friday, Day 2abc, when his flopped set met a straight. In a similar vein, Phil Hellmuth, the 1989 champion, met an unexpected exit after his flopped two pair faced a shocking defeat by an opponent’s ace on the river that resulted in trips. Hellmuth, however, has been struggling to finish in the money for the past eight years at the WSOP Main Event. His last successful stint dates back to 2015 when he bagged the 417th place and took home $21,786. Despite this, Hellmuth isn’t likely to be too disappointed as he secured his 17th career gold bracelet in the 2023 WSOP.
Nevertheless, several other former world champions are still in the competition, with the likes of Jamie Gold, Ryan Riess, Joe Cada, and Tom McEvoy, the 1983 winner, continuing to hold their grounds.
Day 3 of the tournament also saw other notable poker players making their mark. Kathy Liebert, Tom Dwan, Patrik Antonius, Billy Baxter, and Doug Polk all managed to advance to the next level, maintaining good form and, most importantly, top 100 stacks.
The top 1,507 players will secure monetary rewards, with the minimum cash prize set at $15,000. A guaranteed $900,000 awaits anyone who makes it to the final table, and payouts will reach the seven-figure threshold when only eight players remain.
