In an interview for FiOS1 a couple of days ago, Representative Gary Pretlow expressed confidence that 2017 may see the passage of a bill to regulate online poker in New York.
There is a change in Pretlow’s attitude who has previously been skeptical about the fairness of the game, the efficacy of geolocation solutions and the categorization of poker as a game of skill rather than a game of luck. However, the interview revealed that his concerns have been satisfied so Pretlow has made a move towards gaining Assembly support for his proposal.
Currently, there are bills in both the Assembly and the Senate to regulate online poker in New York. Major points in both documents include:
§ Definition of poker as a game of skill
§ Authorization of a maximum of 11 operator licenses
§ 15% taxation on gross gaming revenue
§ Age limit of players 21 or above
According to estimates, the market for New York online poker would amount to approximately $60 million, which would make it a significant revenue generator, hence another reason to push the bill forward.
