Global Poker Index, also known in poker circles as GPI, is the go to place to find online rankings of live tournament poker players. They have listed the top 300 live tournament players in the world in their GPI 300, which Phil Hellmuth recently found unfair due to the high buy-in tournaments that they include in the list.
Now GPI has made agreements with Casino Barcelona and Club Aviation de France, including them in their official tournament rankings system. The ranking system is based on player results over six periods of six months, where the finishing percentage is multiplied with the buy-in factor and also the aging factor is taken into consideration for those tournaments that meets the GPI requirements.
With the new agreements, players can now earn GPI points by playing regular events at the casino and poker club, as well as through special events such as EPT, WPT, Euro Finals of Poker and Estrellas poker tour. A similar deal was made with the European Poker Tour, where GPI will determine the Player of the Year award for them by using their formula.
Daniel Negreanu is currently ranked as the number one GPI player with 3,994.88 points, followed by Marvin Rettenmaier who has 3,774.69 points. Player of the year award is currently led by Mike “Timex” McDonald who has earned 496,14 points, followed by Dan Heimiller who has 427,67 points.
