In an unprecedented showing at the Asian Poker Tour (APT) Taipei 2024, Daisuke Ogita from Japan claimed the Main Event title, securing a monumental TWD 12,944,020 (around $410,137) and the prestigious Gold Lion APT Main Event trophy. This victory marked a significant milestone in Taiwan’s poker history as Ogita topped a record-breaking field of 1,182 participants (737 unique), claiming the largest single-event payout ever awarded in the nation.

Ogita’s win at the APT was not just about the substantial prize money; it was a testament to his skill and determination. Starting the final table with the third-highest chip count, he displayed remarkable strategy and focus, eliminating five out of his eight final table opponents. The highlight of his journey came when he outplayed Taiwan’s Guo Zhang Xi in a nail-biting heads-up match, securing the runner-up spot and a considerable TWD 7,620,000 (approximately $242,508) prize.

Reflecting on his win, Ogita shared his disbelief and joy, stating, “Fantastic! I can’t believe it, it’s amazing,” highlighting the friendly and enthusiastic nature of Asian players. He also extended his gratitude towards his family and supporters back in Japan, humorously noting the luck involved in his victory.

Although a new face to the APT, Daisuke Ogita, has already amassed $1.854,999 in tournament earnings since 2017, according to the HendonMob. He mostly plays in Europe and the US. In April of 2023 he won the PokerStars FPS Main Event for € 307,160, while also winning a European Poker Tour event two months earlier in February for €111,000. He currently stands 7th on Japan’s all-time money list.

The event also celebrated the achievements of other top finishers, including South Korea’s Seungmook Jung and Thailand’s Pitipong Posri, who made significant earnings, demonstrating the competitive spirit and talent present at the final table.
