A clogged pipe in a hotel room in Atlantic City led to the police discovering 2.7 mio worth of counterfeit tournament chips, which had been flushed down the toilet. The clogged pipes led the police back to the room of Christian Lusardi, who has been charged with theft and rigging a public contest.
The chips were sneaked into the $2 million guaranteed Borgata event, which upon discovering it cancelled the tournament. The Borgata staff had done a check of the chips in use in the tournament and found a total of 160 chips with a value of 5,000, providing an additional 800,000 worth of chips top the tournament.
The state Division of Gaming Enforcement had to temporarily freeze the prizes that was in the rigged tournament.
“We are very pleased that the New Jersey State Police Casino Gaming Bureau has apprehended a suspect in connection with the counterfeit chip activity that compromised Event 1 of the Borgata Poker Open,” Lupo said. “While this is a very positive development, the investigation by the (Division of Gaming Enforcement) and the state police is ongoing.”
The DGE hasn’t made any official statements in regards to what will happen with the prize money and buy-ins of the players participating in the tournament but made the following comment: “The division is committed to ensuring confidence and integrity in all gaming operations and will continue to work with Borgata and the New Jersey State Police until this case is closed,”.
Evidence is pointing towards Lusardi had been the one who smuggled the counterfeit chips into the game, doing so on multiple occasions. Lusardi furthermore won a total of $6.814 in the tournament. He is now in prison with a bail set of $300,000.
