According to the Virginia Lottery, September gaming revenue at Virginia’s casinos was around $56.6 million, a record high. With $43 million in contributions, slot machines took the lead, followed by table games with $13.6 million. These numbers show that the state’s gambling business is flourishing.
With over $24.2 million in adjusted revenue, Rivers Casino Portsmouth topped the list of Virginia’s three casinos in September. Caesars Virginia came in second with around $18.3 million, and HR Bristol made up $14.1 million of the state’s total revenue. All together, these casinos gave the Gaming Proceeds Fund, which funds regional community initiatives, almost $11.4 million in taxes.
While Rivers Casino Portsmouth and HR Bristol have been accepting patrons for two years, Caesars Virginia, the state’s newest casino, has been operating for more than a year.
While Virginia’s casino industry is growing, efforts to expand to new locations have faced obstacles. Lawmakers in Petersburg have tried to bring a casino to the city for several years. Despite support in earlier votes, a Senate committee struck down attempts to approve a Petersburg casino in both the 2022 and 2023 legislative sessions.
However, there has been some progress. In early 2024, both the House of Delegates and the Senate passed legislation supporting a potential casino in Petersburg. Senator Lashrecse Aird’s bill passed with significant backing, receiving 78 votes in the House and 24 votes in the Senate.
