Large entertainment complexes with casino gaming floors are becoming more and more popular in Thailand. A recent survey, however, indicates that public hesitancy persists. 1,000 Thai individuals over the age of 18 were polled for a Nida poll from March 18 to 20, which revealed worries about organized crime, gambling-related issues, and dubious economic benefits.
According to the survey, 32.60% of participants voiced moral reservations, believing that gambling might incite immoral conduct. Furthermore, 30.23% questioned the government’s claims that these complexes would have a major positive economic impact. There is also doubt over whether the anticipated financial benefits would balance the costs to society.
The potential rise in problem gambling emerged as a significant issue. Around 28.09% of participants advocated for a comprehensive government plan to prevent gambling addiction and support affected individuals. They called for clear measures to mitigate gambling-related harm.
Money laundering was another prominent concern, with 24.89% of respondents fearing casinos might facilitate illegal financial activities. Doubts persisted regarding the government’s ability to regulate and monitor the sector effectively.
Furthermore, worries over organized crime and potential conflicts loomed large. About 31.83% of respondents anticipated violent disputes due to the presence of casinos. Another 31.68% predicted non-violent conflicts arising from the expansion of gambling establishments.
Academics and business executives have expressed skepticism, despite the government’s continued commitment to building entertainment resorts. Instead of large urban hubs, the Thai Hotels Association recommended that these complexes be constructed in secondary cities. They maintained that secondary cities may gain economically more without making already-existing resource problems, such as water scarcity, worse.
The survey’s findings emphasize the necessity of an open regulatory structure that allays public fears, even in the face of intense legislative pressure. Gaining broader acceptability might be facilitated by establishing precise rules for ethical gaming and upholding stringent financial supervision.
