South Africa is trying to make illegal gambling easier to spot before money changes hands. The National Gambling Board has launched a public verification portal that lists licensed operators and gives users a direct way to check who is actually authorised to trade.

The most important part of the launch is not the website itself. It is the line it draws. If an operator is not on the new portal, it is not authorised to offer gambling services in South Africa, according to the National Gambling Board.
That changes the first step for consumers, regulators, banks, and police. Instead of dealing with uncertainty after a dispute or scam claim appears, the NGB now wants the legality check to happen up front through one searchable register built with provincial licensing authorities. The board says the database will stay updated and will also be available to law enforcement, tax authorities, and financial institutions.
The portal also lands inside a much older South African problem. The NGB has previously warned that illegal operators often present themselves as legitimate, take deposits in rand, and even use official branding to create a false sense of legality. Its strategic plan also flagged weak public knowledge, low enforcement priority, and the role of financial channels in illegal online gambling as ongoing risks.
So the new tool is less about promotion and more about filtering. Acting CEO Lungile Dukwana described it as “a critical step” in protecting South Africans from illegal gambling and said it gives the public a trusted resource to verify licensed operators while also strengthening oversight and accountability across the sector.
South Africa remains the largest regulated gambling market in Africa, and the NGB says the portal is part of a broader effort to protect both the public and the economy by pushing play toward locally licensed operators instead of illegal alternatives.
