Maryland’s Gaming Sector Nets $163.2 Million in April Revenue

Share

The six privately held casinos that make up Maryland’s burgeoning casino sector saw a mixed bag of outcomes in April. In spite of providing a wide range of gaming alternatives, such as table games and slot machines, these casinos together recorded revenue for the month of around $163.2 million. On the other hand, this number represents a 6.6% decline from April 2023.

The six privately operated casinos in Maryland are spread out over many counties in a deliberate manner to appeal to a variety of patrons. Each location adds to the state’s gaming scene, whether it is the glitter and glamor of MGM National Harbor in Prince George’s County or the lively vibe of Live! Casino & Hotel in Anne Arundel County. Rocky Gap Casino Resort, Ocean Downs Casino, Hollywood Casino Perryville, and Horseshoe Casino Baltimore are a few more well-known venues.

Revenue Variances and Impact

Among these casinos, Hollywood Casino Perryville emerged as a standout performer, recording a remarkable 6% increase in revenue compared to April 2023, amounting to almost $8 million. However, Live! Casino & Hotel and Ocean Downs Casino experienced declines of over $1.1 million and $606,000, respectively. The most significant revenue decrease was observed at MGM National Harbor, witnessing a notable 9.8% dip, equating to over $7.4 million.

With percentage revenue drops of 10.8% and 20.6%, respectively, Horseshoe Casino and Rocky Gap Casino saw the biggest declines. This highlights the disparities in problems that different institutions confront in this cutthroat industry.

Maryland’s casino business continues to play a significant role in the state’s economy and community development, especially in the face of volatility in income. Over $69 million in donations from casino gambling were made to the state in April 2024, with an additional $50.3 million going to the Education Trust Fund. The money raised from these ventures not only helps fund educational programs but also helps local companies and the horse racing sector in Maryland, highlighting the casinos’ wider socioeconomic influence.
