Kansas Lottery’s financial results for December 2024 reveal a notable dip in both sports betting and casino gaming revenues. While total settled wagers for sports betting saw a modest increase, revenues in both segments fell significantly, highlighting the challenges faced by the state’s gambling market.
Kansas’ sports betting industry saw total revenue fall to $8.79 million in December, a dramatic 56.2% year-over-year decline. Retail sports betting suffered the most, dropping from $808,961 in December 2023 to a mere $75,037 in December 2024. Similarly, online sports betting revenue decreased by 54.7%.
Despite a slight rise in total settled wagers, which went from $259.7 million in December 2023 to $261.3 million in December 2024, no sports betting provider reported a revenue increase. This downturn marks a significant challenge for the industry, especially following the strong performance of the previous year.
In contrast to sports betting, Kansas’ casino gaming sector experienced a slight decline in December. Total casino revenue for the month stood at $37.1 million, a 0.9% decrease from December 2023. However, not all casinos saw a drop. Hollywood Casino and Kansas Crossing Casino both posted revenue increases. Hollywood saw a 1.3% boost, bringing its total revenue close to $15 million, while Kansas Crossing grew by 5.5%, reaching $3.51 million.
Unfortunately, Boot Hill Casino and Kansas Star Casino faced revenue declines. Boot Hill’s revenue dropped 5.9% to $4.12 million, while Kansas Star saw a 3% decline, totaling $14.5 million.
These December figures contrast with the stronger performance seen in November, when casino revenue jumped 12.2% year-over-year. Sports betting, too, had an impressive 185.9% year-over-year growth compared to November 2023. However, December’s results suggest that the state’s gaming market faced some challenges toward the close of the year.
