China Arrests Hundreds Involved in Online Bets on Overseas Casinos

Shapingba district police in China’s Chongqing city have arrested roughly 300 people in a comprehensive investigation, thereby destroying a large-scale “cross-border gambling” operation using live-streamed casino games from abroad sites. According to a report, the operation, which spanned ten cities throughout the mainland, resulted in the destruction of “seven gambling platforms” and “20 gambling dens,” where people congregated to place their bets.

According to the police, the illegal gaming enterprise netted more than CNY 400 million (US$55.9 million) in cash. Shapingba district police in western China’s Sichuan province have been unrelenting in their pursuit of the perpetrators of this daring plot. They suspect that thousands of Chinese gamblers were tempted to participate by promises of a “virtual experience of an overseas casino” and “immediate offline settlement of wagers” in ingeniously prepared adverts.
