Torpedo bats have sparked buzz around Major League Baseball, and sportsbooks are quickly joining in. DraftKings has introduced a new home run betting market focused on players using the popular bat design.
Before Tuesday’s slate of games, the platform listed odds for sluggers like Elly De La Cruz, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Francisco Lindor to hit homers with the new gear. DraftKings Director of Sports Operations Johnny Avello said, “Torpedo bats are the biggest story in baseball right now, and they’ve already sparked incredible fan engagement early in the MLB season.”
Other sportsbooks have followed suit. Underdog added torpedo bat home run specials, and Fanatics Sportsbook created a themed parlay called “The Torpedo Touch” promoted on social media. These props seem to be sticking around while the trend remains popular.
Avello added, “We’ll continue featuring a dedicated tab for torpedo bat home run props, making it easier than ever for fans to get in on the action.”
On Tuesday, Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe gave bettors a solid return. He launched his third home run of the season with a torpedo bat against Arizona’s Corbin Burnes. Speaking to MLB.com, Volpe said, “The concept makes so much sense. I know I’m bought in. The bigger you can have the barrel where you hit the ball, it makes sense to me.”
Although Volpe was the only torpedo bat user to go deep that day, the buzz didn’t slow down. A day earlier, Elly De La Cruz exploded with two home runs and seven RBIs in a 14-3 win over the Rangers. The hype began when the Yankees hammered nine home runs against Milwaukee in their second game of the season, part of an MLB-record 18 home runs over their first four games.
Betting behavior is shifting. Avello noted that more bets started coming in on Yankees overs following the Milwaukee series. “That’s just bettors following a trend, and they will continue to follow it if it holds up,” he told The Athletic. “We don’t do any knee-jerk reactions on a smaller sample size like three games.”
With no slowdown in fan interest, torpedo bat props may stay on the board for a while.
