Penn State’s Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) has warned students about the dangers of sports betting as it becomes more widely available. The negative impacts that gambling can have on one’s finances, academic performance, and mental health are highlighted by the university’s counseling staff.
CAPS urges students to carefully consider the possible consequences of engaging in sports betting. According to Lori Strayer, CAPS alcohol and other drug coordinator, gambling often goes unnoticed. “Gambling can be a hidden problem since there are few outward signs and people are often afraid to talk about it. That is why it is so important to talk to someone early on. Gambling concerns are treatable, and help is available.”
Stephanie Stama, CAPS assistant director for community education and outreach, further explained the risks. “Sports betting can start as a casual activity but once someone loses money it can quickly lead to shame and fear of talking about the financial, academic, and emotional distress it causes. Sports betting, casino, and gambling platforms are increasingly convenient to access and marketed specifically to college students.”
A 2023 National Council on Problem Gambling study found that young adults, especially college students, are at a higher risk of developing gambling-related problems. The study highlighted the role of social pressure, easy access to betting platforms, and the excitement surrounding sports betting in fostering compulsive gambling behaviors.
In an online statement, Penn State urged students to remain aware of how sports betting can impact their well-being. The university stressed the importance of seeking support if needed. It also listed key warning signs of problem gambling, including wagering more money than planned, borrowing to place bets, and feeling anxiety or stress due to gambling.
