In North Carolina, sports betting was legalized on March 11, allowing residents to place wagers and register with various platforms. At the time of legalization, leagues like the NHL and NBA were beginning their playoff seasons, while MLB was just starting its season.
On July 8, the North Carolina Lottery Commission reported a sports betting handle of $381.8 million for the month. This marks the lowest monthly total since betting was legalized in the state. The dip is primarily due to the lack of active sports offerings. With the NBA and NHL playoffs concluded, and only MLB in season, betting options have been limited. In contrast, May saw a handle of $494.6 million, boosted by playoff betting.
North Carolina’s current sports betting operators include bet365, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, ESPN Bet, FanDuel, Underdog Fantasy, and Fanatics. Notably, Underdog Fantasy has made its debut in the state’s betting industry.
For June, the state reported a gross wagering revenue of $40.3 million, down 36% from May’s figures. The peak for North Carolina came in April, with a handle of $648.9 million and gross wagering revenue nearing $105.3 million.
The Tar Heel State imposes an 18% tax on gross wagering revenue for all licensed online sportsbooks. The proceeds support education, problem gambling initiatives, youth engagement, and events.
