The gaming statistics for September, which were made public by the Massachusetts Gaming Commission, show strong earnings from sports betting and casinos. The gross gaming revenue (GGR) earned by the three casinos in the state—Plainridge Park Casino, MGM Springfield, and Encore Boston Harbor—was around $92 million in total during the month.
In terms of GGR composition, slots were a significant contributor, accounting for approximately $62.8 million. Table games also made a noteworthy impact, bringing in around $29.2 million. When examining the individual performance of each casino, Encore Boston Harbor led the pack with $57.9 million in revenue from both slots and table games. MGM Springfield followed with nearly $21 million, while Plainridge Park Casino reported about $13.4 million for September.
Additionally, the three casinos collectively contributed nearly $26.2 million in taxes to the state last month, showcasing their role in supporting local finances. All three properties operate under Category 1 licenses, which permit them to host retail sports betting locations.
September also saw a significant uptick in sports betting, with the state recording a total handle of $678.7 million. A large portion of this came from online bets, totaling $667.6 million, while retail licensees contributed another $11.1 million. The combined online and retail sports betting operations generated approximately $73.5 million in taxable gaming revenue. Consequently, the state collected nearly $14.6 million in taxes from these betting activities during the month.
Massachusetts started to legalize retail sports betting in January 2023, and in March of the same year, the state opened up its internet sports betting market. This timeline shows how quickly the gaming industry in Massachusetts has evolved and how more and more gamblers are accepting of possibilities for legal wagering.
Overall, the September statistics highlight Massachusetts’s booming gaming industry. Given how much the state’s economy depends on both casinos and sports betting, the industry’s prospects for development and income generation are bright.
