April was a busy month for sports betting in Iowa, with player expenditure showing a mixed bag of outcomes in comparison to other months.
While overall wagering in April was more than in March and February ($272.4 million and $220.6 million, respectively), it was still less than the large amounts gambled in March and February of previous year ($172.6 million).
Of the total amount staked in April, a significant portion, $196.6 million, flowed through online channels, while $12.9 million found its way to retail sportsbooks scattered across the state.
The surge in player spending contributed to a revenue spike, tallying at $16.5 million, marking a 17.0% increase from the previous year. However, this figure represented a downturn of 9.3% compared to March’s $18.2 million.
Online platforms emerged as the primary revenue drivers, raking in $15.7 million, while retail outlets trailed with $812,305 in revenue.
In April, players pocketed a total of $192.3 million in winnings, with $180.9 million attributed to online betting and $12.1 million to retail establishments. Tax contributions amounted to $1.1 million, reflecting the industry’s financial footprint.
FanDuel and Diamond Jo Dubuque maintained their dominance, generating $5.8 million in revenue from $58.3 million in wagers. DraftKings and Wild Rose Jefferson secured the second position with $2.3 million in revenue from $34.0 million in bets.
Wild Rose Clinton and Wild Rose Emmetsburg, affiliated with DraftKings, reported revenues of $2.0 million and $1.8 million, respectively. Diamond Jo Worth stood out with $1.2 million in revenue, underscoring the success of its partnership with FanDuel.
Ameristar II, collaborating with Penn Entertainment, also demonstrated strong performance, garnering $1.1 million in revenue from a $10.0 million spend.
