Sports betting activity in Iowa reached nearly $216.4 million in February, according to the latest report from the Iowa Racing and Gaming Commission. The total betting volume, also known as the handle, dropped by about $4 million compared to the same month last year.
Online wagers dominated the market, with 19 operators handling almost $203.5 million in bets. Bettors across the state won approximately $195 million, with online wagers accounting for nearly $182.5 million of that total.
The report also highlighted net receipts for February. Online sports betting generated $20.9 million in revenue, while the total net receipts for both online and retail betting combined stood at nearly $21.2 million.
Tax contributions from sports betting in February exceeded $1.4 million. Since Iowa legalized sports betting in 2019, the industry has consistently added revenue to the state’s coffers.
Across the United States, 38 states and the District of Columbia now allow sports wagering. The expansion of legalized betting began after the US Supreme Court struck down the federal ban in May 2018, paving the way for individual states to regulate the industry. Iowa joined the growing list of states with legal sports betting a little over a year after the ruling.
