According to the Indiana Gaming Commission’s January sports betting statistics, $538.7 million was handled overall. This indicates that the state’s regulated sports betting business is still expanding, as evidenced by the $58 million increase from January 2024.
With a combined total of almost half of all bets placed last month, Ameristar Casino and Blue Chip Casino controlled Indiana’s gambling scene. With a handle of $185.8 million, Ameristar was in first place, followed by Blue Chip with $181.1 million. Third place went to Hollywood Casino Lawrenceburg, which had a $43 million betting handle.
The taxable adjusted gross revenue (AGR) for Indiana sportsbooks reached $55 million in January, nearly $2 million higher than the same period last year. Blue Chip Casino reported the highest AGR at nearly $22 million, while Ameristar followed with $20.3 million. Sports betting in the state generated approximately $5.2 million in tax revenue last month.
Indiana has allowed legal sports betting since September 2019, covering both in-person and online wagering. Former Governor Eric Holcomb signed the bill into law after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down the federal ban on sports betting. The state remains one of 38 with regulated retail sports wagering and among 30 that permit mobile betting.
Legislators in Indiana are also thinking about expanding online gaming. One proposal to legalize iGaming and another to permit online ticket sales for the Hoosier Lottery were recently accepted by the Indiana House Public Policy Committee. Additionally, the bill contains provisions for electronic pull-tab devices in charitable organizations, bars, and veterans’ groups.
Indiana maintains its position as a major player in the growing U.S. gambling sector thanks to its consistent growth in sports betting and possible developments in iGaming.
