FA’s Betting Policy Under the Spotlight for ‘Double Standards’

Share

The Football Association (FA) finds itself in the spotlight following a report by The Guardian, which brings to light potential inconsistencies within its gambling policies. The primary figure drawing attention is Matthew Benham, the owner of Brentford FC. The Guardian’s investigation suggests that Benham might have personally benefited from football bets, conducted through a London-based betting syndicate named MSPP Admin. While these claims circulate, Benham has been steadfast in stating that he fully complies with all FA betting rules.

The FA’s regulations prohibit anyone connected to football from betting on matches, ensuring the sport’s integrity remains intact. Interestingly, a stark contrast is seen with Brentford’s star, Ivan Toney, who is currently under an eight-month suspension due to infractions against these very gambling rules.

While certain club owners such as Benham, Tony Bloom of Brighton, and the Coates family behind Bet365 and Stoke City, are granted permissions to operate betting businesses, there’s no substantial evidence to suggest any malpractice or personal gains from these bets.

The Guardian’s investigation raised critical questions regarding Benham’s involvement with MSPP Admin, a syndicate that places bets on global football matches, avoiding UK games. This organization is co-owned by Cliff Crown and Philip Whall, who are integral parts of Brentford’s management. It’s crucial to note that MSPP Admin pools resources to implement a unified betting strategy, aiming to optimize returns.

The revelations have heightened calls for transparency in FA’s policies. Public figures like Clive Betts MP and sports lawyer Nick De Marco, emphasize the need for clarity and fairness in the implementation of these regulations, considering the significant intertwining of football and betting in recent years.

Benham, leveraging his prowess in statistical sports gambling, not only elevated Brentford to the Premier League but also holds a substantial stake in the Danish Superliga side, FC Midtjylland. His association with such sophisticated, data-driven betting endeavors raises essential questions about the role and influence of club owners in the betting landscape.

With the increasing symbiosis between football and gambling, this revelation by The Guardian highlights the importance of clear, transparent regulations and the consistent application of the same to maintain the integrity and fairness of the sport.
