On July 16, the state of Louisiana declared that wide receiver Kayshon Boutte of the New England Patriots had his charges of underage gambling and computer fraud dropped. These accusations against Boutte date back to his time at Louisiana State University (LSU).
Due to allegations that he had engaged in illicit sports betting while attending LSU, Boutte was placed under arrest in January in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He took part fully in the Patriots’ spring practices earlier this year, in spite of these accusations.
Louisiana State Police Gaming Enforcement Division investigators revealed that Boutte placed sports bets between April 6, 2022, and May 7, 2023, while he was still 20 years old. Boutte allegedly used an alias to bypass age restrictions for sports wagering in the state.
Authorities reported that the alias account placed over 8,900 wagers, including at least 17 bets on NCAA football games and six involving LSU. Boutte continued betting for approximately a week after being drafted by the Patriots. The NFL’s gambling policy allows players to bet on sports, excluding anything related to the league.
With the charges behind him, Boutte now has an equal opportunity to earn a roster spot with the Patriots. This comes at a crucial time, as the team is undergoing significant changes, including hiring a new coach and drafting a new quarterback. Boutte aims to prove himself during this transitional period.
Despite the controversy surrounding the betting scandal and injuries sustained during his junior season, the Patriots selected Boutte in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft.
