Concerns about players engaging in gambling activities have assumed a central role in the changing sports betting scene in the United States. These worries are heightened by the most recent instance involving former LSU wide receiver Kayshon Boutte, who is currently a member of the New England Patriots and faces allegations of underage gambling and NCAA football game betting.
Charges against Kayshon Boutte include misdemeanor gambling under the age of 21 and felony computer fraud. According to the Gaming Enforcement Division of the Louisiana State Police, Boutte allegedly placed over 8,900 bets, at least 17 of which were on NCAA football games. Remarkably, six of these bets supposedly implicated his LSU squad, which led to more inquiry.
In response to the allegations, LSU issued a statement acknowledging the situation and affirming their cooperation with the ongoing investigation. The university expressed gratitude for measures detecting and discouraging sports gambling-related misconduct and emphasized no evidence of involvement by other student-athletes in the prohibited activities.
Wagering underage is a crime under Louisiana law, and NCAA rules strictly prohibit betting on any sport, with additional penalties for those betting on their own teams. Boutte allegedly placed bets from April 6, 2022, through May 7, 2023, using an alias at an online sportsbook, according to the Gaming Enforcement Division.
Boutte had a great career at LSU, amassing 131 catches for 1,782 yards. However, these legal issues might cause problems for him when he plays professionally with the Patriots. The Patriots are aware of Boutte’s assistance with Louisiana authorities in the investigation, and the NFL allows players to gamble on sports, with the exception of NFL games.
