In a groundbreaking initiative, ATP, Tennis Data Innovations (TDI), and Sportradar have unveiled Safe Sport, a revolutionary service designed to tackle online abuse aimed at professional tennis players. This new offering marks a significant advancement in player protection by combining AI moderation, educational resources, and investigative support into a single comprehensive service.
Safe Sport will be available to the Top 250 ATP singles players and the Top 50 doubles players, starting this month. The service leverages advanced AI technologies from Sportradar and Arwen AI to monitor players’ social media channels for harmful content. This includes detecting toxic comments, spam, and bots in 29 languages. Flagged comments are instantly hidden, ensuring players and their followers are shielded from offensive material. Arwen AI, which processes 600,000 comments daily, safeguards over 750 million users globally across major platforms like Facebook, Instagram, X (Twitter), YouTube, and TikTok.
In addition to AI monitoring, Sportradar’s team of intelligence analysts will investigate potential threats and criminal comments, linking online behavior to real-world accountability. Players will also benefit from an educational program that addresses handling online abuse, managing risks, and maintaining integrity on social media.
Safe Sport represents ATP’s most ambitious effort yet to address online abuse, an ongoing issue affecting athletes and fans alike. Andrew Azzopardi, ATP Director of Safeguarding, emphasized the importance of this initiative: “The ATP is committed to safeguarding players and their wellbeing. This includes taking a proactive stance against online abuse, which has become a very important issue in the lives of modern athletes. This collaboration will ensure that tennis is playing its part in tackling this issue, and shining a light on the effects that harmful online discourse can have on our communities. We’re grateful for the support of TDI and the expertise of Sportradar in making this happen.”
Matthew Ebden, ATP Player and Player Advisory Council President, also highlighted the significance of Safe Sport: “Online abuse has become a real issue for so many professional athletes, as it also has for so many others online in general all around the world. Safe Sport is a game changer and has been developed specifically to help fix this problem.”
Andreas Krannich, Executive Vice President of Sportradar Integrity Services, praised the innovative approach: “This partnership is groundbreaking in sport as we’re bringing together AI-driven auto-moderation, education and investigative services for the first time. The Safe Sport solution offers players better protection from online harm, representing a significant leap forward in safeguarding mental and physical wellbeing, enabling them to concentrate on delivering their best performances.”
