Americans Expected to Bet $3.1 Billion on March Madness

Legal sports betting continues to gain traction in the United States, with the American Gaming Association (AGA) projecting that Americans will wager $3.1 billion on the upcoming March Madness tournament. That marks an increase from the $2.7 billion bet during last year’s tournament.

Joe Maloney, AGA’s Senior Vice President of Strategic Communications, highlighted the excitement surrounding the event. “March Madness is one of the most exciting times in American sports, with fans fired up for both the men’s and women’s NCAA tournaments,” he said. Maloney also pointed out that with legal betting expanding across the country, more fans than ever can place bets legally and responsibly.

Since the US Supreme Court overturned the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in 2018, 38 states and Washington DC have legalized sports betting. Support for regulated wagering remains strong, with AGA research showing that 75% of Americans favor legal sports betting in their home state, while 90% see it as an acceptable form of entertainment.

Throughout March, the AGA will promote its Have a Game Plan, Bet Responsibly campaign, which encourages bettors to follow five key principles: set a budget, keep it social, know the odds, play legally, and keep emotions in check. Maloney emphasized the importance of the latest principle, “Keep Your Cool,” which is designed to remind bettors to enjoy the experience while respecting the game.

The 2025 March Madness bracket will be revealed on March 16, with the First Four games kicking off on March 18.
