Sports betting in Virginia delivered strong growth during August 2025, according to figures released by the Virginia Lottery. Total handle reached $510.2 million across mobile and retail operations, a year-over-year increase of 22.4 percent.
Good to Know
The numbers underline how mobile betting dominates the Virginia market. Online sportsbooks generated almost all of the monthly activity, paying out close to $444.4 million in winnings and producing just over $57.3 million in adjusted gross revenue. Retail activity added another $938,895 in revenue, which still represented a gain of more than 126 percent from the prior year.
Total adjusted gross revenue for August reached $58.3 million, up 66.6 percent from August 2024. Mobile operators alone improved their revenue by 65.9 percent, reinforcing that bettors continue to favor digital platforms over in-person wagering.
The Virginia Lottery noted that 10 operators reported positive adjusted gross revenues during the month. As a result, tax payments contributed $8.7 million to the General Fund and to the Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund.
State law imposes a 15 percent tax on adjusted gross revenue for each licensed sportsbook. The Problem Gambling Treatment and Support Fund is managed by the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services, providing resources to help address gambling-related issues.
