On Tuesday, Governor Phil Scott of Vermont made a noteworthy revelation, stating that the first day of internet sports wagering will be January 11, 2024. Finalizing deals with key industry participants, the Department of Liquor and Lottery has selected DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics to run sports wagering systems within the state.
Governor Scott, who had originally proposed legalizing sports wagering several years ago, expressed his satisfaction with the development. In a statement, he remarked, “Vermonters and visitors alike will soon be able to access a regulated sports wagering marketplace, which will come with important consumer protections and generate revenue for the State.”
The operators who were selected were DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics, three of the five sportsbooks that were taken into consideration during the bidding process. They have both agreed to a six-year sentence, with extensions possible if they both decide to carry on with lawful gambling activities in the years that follow. Sports betting is expected to bring in up to $7 million for the state in its first year of operation.
Vermont Liquor and Lottery Commissioner Wendy Knight expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are excited to offer sports enthusiasts the ability to engage in sports wagering in Vermont with three of the industry’s top companies.”
Governor Scott signed the state’s online sports betting measure into law in June, bringing Vermont’s legalization of the activity into line with that of over thirty other states. An yearly report on the effect of sports betting on problem gambling in Vermont will be sent to the Legislature by the Department of Liquor and Lottery and the Department of Mental Health in collaboration.
Operators must present a responsible gaming strategy every year that includes information on problem gambling, resources for worried bettors, player limitations set by the house, and self-exclusion initiatives. Users are only allowed to deposit money via a debit card or personal bank account, and no credit cards are accepted in order to encourage responsible gaming. Users must be at least 21 years old.
Pre-registration is now formally available in anticipation of the January launch. This action enables operators to carry out marketing campaigns and pre-register players, which helps ensure a smooth and organized launch into Vermont’s online sports betting market.
