According to the Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery, approximately $21.5 million was wagered on sports in February. Over 670,000 bets were placed by players, with an average wager of $32.10.
It’s interesting to see that out-of-state wagerers contributed significantly. More than a third of the state’s total handle, or more than $8.4 million, was wagered by them. The average stake of out-of-state players was $49.01, $23 more than the average wager of Vermonters.
While operators reported about $2.2 million in adjusted gross sports wagering income for the month, Vermont players brought home a total of $19.1 million in prizes.
Basketball remained the most popular choice among Vermont’s sports bettors. The sport attracted $7.6 million in wagers, accounting for nearly a third of the total handle.
Following basketball, soccer and tennis also saw significant betting activity. Soccer bets reached almost $3.2 million, while tennis wagers contributed approximately $3.1 million. Football generated $1.4 million in bets, and eBasketball added close to $0.5 million. Other sports combined to bring in an additional $5.6 million.
Vermont’s proximity to neighboring states played a key role in the state’s betting numbers. Out-of-state visitors, drawn by the state’s regulated sports betting market, contributed heavily to the February handle.
Since the repeal of the Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) in May 2018, 38 states have launched legal sports betting markets. Vermont’s growing participation reflects the widespread expansion of regulated sports betting across the US.
With consistent monthly reports and notable contributions from visiting bettors, Vermont’s sports wagering market continues to show strong potential.
