VCPG Urges Responsible Betting Ahead of the Super Bowl

As the Super Bowl approaches, the Virginia Council on Problem Gambling (VCPG) is reminding sports bettors to “know your limits.” The much-anticipated game between the Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagles is scheduled for February 9, attracting a massive audience of both casual viewers and those participating in sports betting.

Dr. Carolyn Hawley, President of the VCPG, highlighted the increasing concerns around sports gambling. “Many people are developing problems very quickly due to the onset of sports betting legalization along with the growth in options on mobile devices for sports betting,” she explained. The combination of speed, frequency, and the rush associated with betting can intensify the addictive process, she added, noting that the experience taps into the brain’s dopamine system.

With the growing prevalence of legal sports betting across the U.S., responsible gambling has become a key topic. As of now, 38 states, including the District of Columbia, have legalized sports betting, and mobile sports betting is available in 30 states. This expansion has made it easier than ever for individuals to place wagers, especially on major events like the Super Bowl.

Dr. Hawley emphasized the importance of recognizing the risks involved in gambling, particularly during high-stakes events like the Super Bowl. “As friends and families join together to participate in one of the biggest sports wagering events of the year, we want to remind people of the risks involved with gambling,” she stated.

She also encouraged individuals to have open discussions with loved ones about sports betting, especially if they know someone who might be tempted to overindulge. “If you have a friend or loved one who can be tempted to indulge in sports betting, discuss a plan to help them cope with the triggers that can creep up before Super Bowl Sunday,” she advised.

For those struggling with gambling, the VCPG offers support, and Hawley stressed that bettors should set clear limits before placing their bets. “Before you place a bet on the big game, know your limits. For those who are experiencing problems, we can help,” she concluded.
