In an effort to prevent match-fixing and preserve the integrity of sports, Sweden has formally declared its intention to ratify the Macolin Convention. This action comes after the nation first announced its support for the plan in October of last year, when a number of ministries did the same.
By ratifying the Macolin Convention, Sweden becomes the 13th European Union nation to formally adopt the treaty. Other European countries that have already ratified include Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, Portugal, and Spain, among others. Beyond the EU, nations like Norway, Moldova, and Ukraine have also ratified the agreement, while Australia, Morocco, and Russia remain non-EU signatories.
The Macolin Convention stands as the only international legal framework designed to tackle match-fixing and sports manipulation. It establishes clear guidelines for collaboration between public authorities, sports bodies, and betting operators to prevent, detect, and penalize match-fixing activities.
Sweden’s Social Affairs Minister Jakob Forssmed emphasized the importance of this step in fighting match-fixing across borders. He stated: “Match-fixing is a serious and increasing threat in sports and is happening more often across national borders. By now joining the Macolin Convention, Sweden gets full access to deepened international cooperation and information exchange.” Forssmed added that this move is crucial for enhancing sports integrity.
Financial Market Minister Niklas Wykman also expressed his support, noting the decision’s impact on the gambling market. He said: “There must be order in the Swedish gambling market. The decision means that we can continue to suppress crime and create security for those who play.”
Sweden’s ratification reflects a growing international effort to protect sports from corruption and manipulation. With access to broader international cooperation, the country strengthens its ability to combat match-fixing while fostering trust in both sports and the gambling market.
As match-fixing continues to pose a significant global challenge, Sweden’s commitment demonstrates its dedication to protecting sports integrity through collective action.
