During the Bet Bash event, a prestigious professional sports betting networking conference, the induction ceremony took center stage. Each honoree’s legacy was memorialized during this occasion with a commemorative plaque located within the sportsbook. These plaques, which include the inductee’s name, year of induction, and biography, serve as a reminder of their accomplishments.
Circa’s CEO Derek Stevens, Mike Palm, Circa’s Vice President of Operations, and Gadoon “Spanky” Kyrollos, founder of the Sports Gambling Hall of Fame and Bet Bash, presided over the induction ceremony. They collaborated to create a historic event that celebrated the honorees’ revolutionary effect.
Among the honored figures is Billy Baxter, a luminary known for his prowess in both professional sports betting and poker. Baxter’s legacy includes his instrumental role in supporting Stu Ungar’s memorable victory at the 1997 World Series of Poker Main Event, a triumph that marked a record-tying third win.
Michael “Roxy” Roxborough, a prominent oddsmaker, carved his own niche in the annals of sports betting history. His innovative approach, integrating mathematical formulas and computer models, reshaped bookmaking during the 1980s and 1990s. Additionally, Roxborough’s co-founding of “America’s Line,” a widely-read betting odds column, further solidified his influence.
Scotty Schettler, celebrated for his role as the sportsbook director at the iconic Stardust, is a notable addition. His pioneering efforts in introducing the Stardust lottery allowed individuals to wager on opening lines at specific times, democratizing the betting process and fostering inclusivity.
Jimmy Vaccaro, a pivotal figure in Las Vegas’ sports betting growth, stands as a testament to unwavering dedication. Vaccaro’s legacy includes instrumental roles at establishments like the Barbary Coast and The Mirage, where he played a pivotal part in expanding sports betting offerings across the city.
The legendary Billy Walters, renowned for his unmatched sports betting prowess spanning 36 years, finds his rightful place. A cornerstone of the Computer Group, Walters embraced mathematical formulas and computer models in the 1980s, setting new standards for sports betting success.
The Hall of Fame also honors those who’ve left a lasting imprint, like Jack Franzi and Jackie Gaughan, both instrumental in oddsmaking and the concept of a casino sportsbook. Bob Martin’s expertise in oddsmaking during the 1960s and 1970s is celebrated, alongside Charles McNeil’s invention and popularization of the point spread and teasers.
Frank “Lefty” Rosenthal, whose legacy was immortalized in the film “Casino,” remains an icon. His transformation of the Stardust’s race and sportsbook echoes through time, symbolizing innovation and activity within the realm of gambling.
