The Swedish Gambling Authority (SGA), Spelinspektionen, and the International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in an effort to strengthen the integrity of sports betting in Sweden. Together, the leading international watchdog on betting integrity and the regulatory authority that manages the Swedish gaming industry will work together.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) enables the sharing of information on questionable betting practices found on Swedish sports. To identify and report any irregularities in betting on Swedish sporting events, IBIA, which accounts for a sizeable share of the SGA-licensed betting market with a value of SEK4,690 million in sports betting GGR in 2022, will make use of its worldwide client account transaction data.
IBIA CEO Khalid Ali underlined the organization’s dedication to work closely with the SGA, utilizing its worldwide data resources to find and expose questionable betting activity on Swedish sports. Maintaining the integrity of Swedish sports and the regulated betting market is the main goal.
The Swedish government said in December 2023 that it intended to make changes to the Gambling Ordinance, including making sure the Macolin Convention was fully followed. It is also suggested that the SGA create and run a platform wherein regulated betting businesses, national sports federations, and the SGA itself may exchange information on alleged match-fixing.
The Director-General of SGA, Camilla Rosenberg, stressed the need of information exchange about questionable betting practices in order to protect sports integrity. The agreement with IBIA is seen to be a positive step in improving the coordination of efforts to combat match-fixing.
One of the most important non-profit organizations in the world for maintaining integrity in the sports betting industry is IBIA. IBIA oversees more than 125 top sports betting brands and around 50 member organizations. It tracks more over $137 billion in betting turnover yearly. The association has played a significant role in disclosing suspicious activity; 50 alarms were reported during the quarter, according to its Q3 2023 integrity report.
The joint endeavors of SGA, Spelinspektionen, and IBIA demonstrate a shared dedication to preserving the credibility of the sports betting industry in Sweden.
