Prophet Exchange to Temporarily Halt Operations in New Jersey

Share

Prophet Exchange, a pioneer in introducing exchange betting to the New Jersey market, is set to suspend its operations in the state from May 28. Co-founder and COO Jake Benzaquen assures patrons that this move is strategic, emphasizing a future return, stating, “We’ll be back in more states soon.”

Since its inception in August 2022, Prophet Exchange has revolutionized sports betting in New Jersey by introducing exchange betting. Unlike traditional sportsbooks, Prophet Exchange enables bettors to engage in peer-to-peer wagering, eliminating the need for a house. This innovative model allows the company to profit by taking a percentage of the winnings, offering users a more economically viable alternative.

Unique Features and Departure

Prophet Exchange’s departure from New Jersey leaves a void in the market, with Sporttrade emerging as the sole exchange betting platform in the Garden State. The platform’s unique feature of enabling bettors to trade positions during games sets it apart from conventional sportsbooks, providing users with enhanced flexibility and control over their bets.

In an attempt to further expand its user base, Prophet Exchange launched a marketing initiative last May, encouraging bettors to leverage boosts at traditional sportsbooks while placing complementary bets on Prophet Exchange for guaranteed profits.

Co-founder and CEO Dean Sisun elucidated the rationale behind this strategy, highlighting the company’s focus on liquidity and risk mitigation. He remarked, “We don’t care about arbitrage. We don’t take any risks. If someone is trading on our exchange and laying off prices with us, it’s just volume for us. Plus, it gives us liquidity for other people to go and bet. At the end of the day, we are purely a liquidity exchange, and any sort of volume that comes in, we welcome.”

Although New Jersey remains the only state where exchange betting is currently legal, legislative efforts in several other states indicate a potential shift towards similar models. This suggests a promising future for exchange betting platforms like Prophet Exchange, poised to capitalize on evolving regulatory landscapes across the United States.
