Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is facing questions after screenshots surfaced online showing alleged Venmo transactions labeled for “sports gambling” during his time at Washington State in 2022. The claims remain unverified, and Mateer has denied involvement in any online gambling.

The images, posted to X this Monday, appear to show Mateer sending two payments to Richard Roaten. Roaten’s Venmo profile displayed a man in a Washington State #59 jersey — a number listed in 2022 rosters as belonging to Landon Roaten.
One alleged payment, dated Nov. 20, 2022, was for “UCLA vs. USC.” That rivalry game took place on Nov. 19, 2022, with USC defeating UCLA 48-45 in a high-scoring matchup led by quarterback Caleb Williams. Another alleged payment to Roaten read “sports gambling,” while a third alleged payment from Roaten to Mateer on Nov. 23 was labeled “Ultra sports gambling FIFA World Cup.”
In a post on X, Mateer dismissed the allegations.
Mateer, who transferred from Washington State to Oklahoma after the 2023 season, was a freshman at the time of the alleged payments. As of Tuesday morning, SoonerScoop reported that University of Oklahoma officials are aware of the screenshots and are reviewing the situation. The NCAA has not issued a statement.
The transactions in question were removed from public view on Venmo shortly after the screenshots began circulating. Roaten and his twin brother, Luke, now play football at Abilene Christian University.
The NCAA prohibits student-athletes from placing bets on both professional and college sports. While discussions have taken place about allowing bets on pro leagues, any such change has not been implemented. Under current rules, confirmed violations can result in suspensions or loss of eligibility.
The allegations against Mateer remain unconfirmed, and no formal action has been announced.
