North Carolina’s Online Sports Betting Set to Launch Mobile Sports Betting in March

Share

In a major move, the North Carolina State Lottery Commission approved the state’s first online sports betting market, allowing participants to start creating accounts on March 1, 2024. By coincidence, this day falls precisely during March Madness, the NCAA’s yearly college basketball tournament, which is a critical time for bettors on sports.

The launch date was approved in response to the Commission’s recent notification that operators had until January 26 to submit their suggested internal controls. Operators wishing to access North Carolina’s sports betting mobile app must first get these controls approved, which adds another level of inspection to guarantee a safe and easy betting experience.

Since December, the North Carolina State Lottery Commission has been in charge of the licensing procedure. The Commission’s chair, Ripley Rand, stressed that the length of the license application procedure is what ultimately determines when the launch will take place. The regulatory process is almost over, with a 60-day window for license approval and a 10-day opportunity for operators to put proposed improvements into effect.

Legislative Path to Sports Betting

On June 14 of the previous year, Governor Roy Cooper signed House Bill 347 into law in North Carolina, opening the door for sports betting. The legislative process started in March, and on June 1st, the law was approved by the state house after it had successfully passed the state senate. Governor Cooper received the final version of the law on June 9, reaffirming the state’s commitment to sports betting regulation.

By permitting wagers on collegiate sports, esports, and other sports contests approved by the Commission, House Bill 347 has established the groundwork for a varied sports betting environment in North Carolina. A set 18% tax on the gross gaming revenue of each license holder is part of the established tax system.

The measure required the state to publish sports betting regulations before January 8, 2024, in order to provide a well-organized regulatory framework. It also required sports betting providers to begin taking bets by June 14, 2024, setting up a detailed schedule for the state’s entry into the thrilling world of online sports betting. March Madness promises to bring exciting basketball action together with the opening of a thriving and regulated sports betting industry, just as North Carolina prepares for this historic event.
