North Carolina Sports Betting Reaches New Heights in August

Share

August saw a sharp increase in sports betting activity in North Carolina carrying their good numbers from the last month. Bets made by players topped $370.4 million, a substantial rise of about $30 million over the previous month. This uptick demonstrates the increasing support for sports betting that is legal and has been accessible throughout the state since March.

North Carolina has emerged as a major force in the sports betting market not long after it became one of the more than 35 states in the United States to authorize the activity. The August data show both the growing influence of this recently regulated industry and strong player involvement.

Revenue and Tax Contributions

August proved to be a lucrative month for North Carolina. Bettors won a staggering $333.7 million, with promotional wagering revenue nearing $13.2 million. The gross wagering revenue for the month reached $33.7 million. Importantly, sports betting contributed around $6.1 million in state taxes, underscoring its financial benefit for the state.

The North Carolina State Lottery Commission has been actively issuing licenses to sports wagering operators. Currently, eight operators hold licenses, including the latest addition, Tribal Casino Gaming Enterprise, part of the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Other licensed operators include FanDuel Sportsbook, BetMGM, DraftKings, Fanatic Sportsbook, bet365, ESPN Bet, and Underdog Sports Wagering.

The Commission recently announced that two additional provisional supplier licenses have been granted. According to a statement, “As of Feb. 29, the Commission has issued three full licenses for sports wagering suppliers, 20 provisional supplier licenses, and three sports wagering service provider licenses.”

Regulations currently permit the Lottery Commission to issue up to 12 interactive sports wagering operator licenses statewide. This will eventually allow for a diverse range of betting options, including online, mobile, and in-person wagering, enhancing accessibility for North Carolina’s sports betting enthusiasts.
