North Carolina sports betting keeps climbing, and October delivered another milestone. The latest numbers from the North Carolina State Lottery Commission show a market that continues to grow fast, driven by an active sports calendar and strong operator performance.
Good to Know
October always draws heavy action, but the jump in North Carolina stood out. Bettors wagered $811.4 million, topping the previous record by roughly $125 million and rising more than thirty percent year over year. The state now joins eight others that have crossed the eight hundred million line in a single month.
The market went live in March 2024, and since then nine months have cleared six hundred million in handle. The mix of MLB postseason games, NFL action, college football, and the early NBA and NHL schedules all helped lift October numbers. More than $1.5 billion has been wagered since football season kicked off in late August.
North Carolina bettors took home nearly $729 million in winnings during the month. It became the highest amount returned to players so far in the state’s short online betting history.
Revenue also continued to climb. The eight licensed online operators reported $78.1 million in gross revenue, up over sixty percent from the previous October. Only April 2024 posted a higher total, when operators brought in more than $105 million.
October marked the fifth time operators have topped seventy million. The 9.6 percent hold improved from the eight percent figure recorded the year before and nearly matched the September percentage.
Promotion spend dipped from $32 million to $27.1 million, and canceled or voided wagers rose slightly to $4.3 million.
A stronger hold and a larger handle combined for a major tax month. North Carolina collected $14.1 million from operators due to the eighteen percent tax rate.
Total tax revenue for 2025 now moves past $100 million. Since regulated online betting launched in March 2024, the total tax haul has cleared $200 million.
A packed sports calendar with NFL, college football, MLB playoffs, and early NBA and NHL games drove more wagering activity.
