NFL Global Teams Can Now Sell Sportsbook Sponsorships Locally

Share

NFL’s Global Market Program teams have been authorized to extend sportsbook sponsorships to legal gambling operators within their nations. Effective June 16, these teams are no longer limited to sponsoring sportsbooks with league-level contracts, expanding the opportunities to increase revenue and broaden their fanbase internationally. This significant shift does not predict drastic short-term income changes, but insiders consider it a step towards better monetization.

The modification acknowledges the maturity of gambling markets outside the US. Team sources state that these mature markets have gambling operators experienced in leveraging sports brands to drive market share. Regarding this development, NFL GM/Sports Betting, David Highhill, said, “Unlike some other sponsorship categories, in sports betting, so much of the entertainment is tied to the live game itself, and we think that’s a key part of driving engagement and fans growth abroad.”

The new rule will take effect immediately in countries including Germany, Mexico, Austria, Canada, France, Ghana, Spain, and Switzerland. However, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand will implement the rule in 2024.

Supplementary Rule Amendments

In addition to this rule, the NFL enacted two more changes on June 16. First, teams operating in Germany, Great Britain, and Mexico will now have additional commercial rights to stadium spaces during NFL games, a privilege previously controlled by the NFL. Secondly, the “Fan of the Year” program will be expanded globally, with teams selecting an overseas fan of the year and the league choosing an overall international fan of the year to be honored at the draft.

The NFL’s Global Markets Program, initiated in 2022, currently encompasses 21 teams across 14 countries. Despite initial slow business growth, many owners and executives are optimistic about the long-term strategic benefits overseas. One club director mentioned, “All of us thought this would be more ripe.”

Bobby Gallo, NFL SVP/Club Business Development, expressed satisfaction with the program’s progress considering its infancy, stating, “We believe we’ve seen strong momentum commercially through year one of the program. So far there have been 30 sponsorship deals executed by the 21 teams, 14 Fanatics e-commerce sites established in the new markets and 42 preseason games broadcast abroad.”
