New Arrests Shake NBA Betting Scandal

Share

Important participants in a recent NBA betting scam, Timothy McCormack and Mahmud Mullah, were freed on a $50,000 bail every Thursday morning. Federal investigators had questioned them as early as May 30, according to the lawsuit.

Alleged wagers on games featuring former Toronto Raptor Jontay Porter are at the heart of the controversy. Porter is prominently mentioned in relation to an NBA player who is suspended, even though he is not named in the accusation. Porter became the first player to be suspended for life for betting on games when NBA Commissioner Adam Silver handed him a lifetime suspension in April. Porter allegedly communicated private health information with his accomplices and placed bets on Raptors games.

Profits from Manipulated Games

The complaint details how McCormack and Mullah, along with others, profited from games where Porter intentionally removed himself early to influence prop bets. McCormack allegedly made a $33,250 profit from a $7,000 bet on January 26 and a $36,000 profit from an $8,000 bet on March 20. Mullah’s bets on the March 20 game reportedly earned him $1.13 million from five “under” bets.

The lead suspect, Long Phi Pham, was arrested on June 3 at JFK airport while attempting to board a plane to Australia. Released on $750,000 bond, Pham, along with McCormack and Mullah, appeared in the US District Court for the Eastern District of New York this week. Federal agents are still pursuing a fourth suspect involved in the betting ring.

DraftKings and FanDuel, both co-official sports betting partners of the NBA, reported suspicious activity following the March 20 game. The International Betting Integrity Association (IBIA) received the reports and subsequently informed the FBI. According to the complaint, Mullah’s account was suspended by either DraftKings or FanDuel after his profitable bets on March 20. Mullah later texted a co-conspirator on April 10, expressing frustration and urgency in recovering his principal amount from the betting company.

The sports betting sector has had a turbulent week, which coincides with the arrests. News of five Major League Baseball players being looked at for possible betting infractions surfaced on Monday. Tucupita Marcano of the San Diego Padres was in danger of a lifetime ban by Tuesday. In addition, former baseball player Shohei Ohtani’s interpreter Ippei Mizuhara admitted on Tuesday that he had stolen about $17 million to settle gambling debts. Mizuhara may be fined $1.5 million and imprisoned for up to 33 years. After the plea, MLB exonerated Ohtani of any wrongdoing.
