NCAA Study Highlights Changes in Sports Betting Behavior Among Student-Athletes

According to a recent NCAA research, which examines the gambling habits of more than 20,000 student-athletes, education-based programs that encourage responsible sports betting have shown success.

This latest study, part of ongoing research since 2004, provides valuable insights into how education is helping shift gambling behaviors among student-athletes. NCAA President Charlie Baker emphasized the importance of continued focus on education and harm prevention. “We need to continue to focus on education and additional harm prevention techniques in this space,” Baker said. He noted that many young people are exposed to gambling during high school, and by the time they graduate, some may develop unhealthy betting habits. “We are focused on supporting student-athletes and providing them with resources to combat these behaviors.”

Since the US Supreme Court lifted the federal sports betting ban in 2018, gambling laws have evolved across 38 states, but the NCAA’s research indicates that overall sports betting participation rates among student-athletes remain relatively unchanged. The study found that “similar percentages of NCAA student-athletes reported betting on sports for money in 2016 and 2024.”

Key Findings on Betting Habits

The 2024 survey showed a significant difference in gambling habits between male and female athletes. 22% of NCAA men admitted to placing a bet on sports at least once in the past year, compared to just 5% of NCAA women. In terms of the social aspect of gambling, the survey revealed that a large majority of both men and women consider it a social activity. “85% of men and 95% of women say they are most likely to gamble with family, a romantic partner, teammates, or friends outside of sports,” according to the findings.

NCAA Chief Medical Officer Dr. Deena Casiero highlighted the need for continued emphasis on responsible gaming practices. “It remains essential that we continue to embrace and implement harm reduction strategies that lower risk and foster prevention of problem gambling,” Casiero said. “We remain committed to research-backed methods of promoting healthy behaviors to support our student-athletes and to reduce the stigma associated with problem gambling.”
