Mississippi’s Online Sports Betting Bill Faces Senate Opposition

Share

Despite overwhelming support from the House, Mississippi’s bid to allow online sports betting has stalled in the Senate. Adding provisions for mobile sports betting to two different Senate proposals was a last-ditch effort by lawmakers in the House Gaming Committee to keep the plan alive. However, the bill’s future is now in doubt due to Senate opposition.

Previously, when the Senate Gaming Committee refused to act on a bill that was approved by the House, members of the House had to find another way to proceed. House Gaming Chairman Casey Eure has been irritated by Senate Gaming Chairman David Blount’s outspoken opposition, claiming that the House had previously modified the bill to suit Senate concerns.

Key Provisions and Economic Impact

Earlier this year, the House passed the Mississippi Mobile Sports Wagering Act by an overwhelming 88-10 vote. One major revision allows casinos to partner with two sports betting platforms instead of one, giving smaller casinos a better chance to compete with larger Gulf Coast resorts. Additionally, the bill prohibits credit card transactions for wagers, a safeguard added to address problem gambling concerns.

Despite these adjustments, Senate leaders remain hesitant, citing consumer protection issues and potential disruptions to Mississippi’s well-established gaming industry. Blount has emphasized the need for careful consideration before expanding gambling laws.

If passed, the bill would impose a 12% tax on sportsbook revenues, with most funds allocated to infrastructure projects. Without legalization, Mississippi risks losing an estimated $40 million to $80 million annually in potential tax revenue. As neighboring states continue to embrace mobile betting, Mississippi could fall behind in the growing online gambling market.
