The state’s betting activity has significantly decreased, according to the Mississippi Gaming Commission’s July 2024 sports betting report. Mississippi’s sports betting handle for July came to $13.9 million. Compared to June’s figures, this amount shows an almost $6 million drop.
The betting trends for July revealed a notable regional disparity in tastes. The majority of the state’s betting handle was contributed by the most active players, who were found around the coast. They bet about $7.7 million, a significant portion of which went toward sports parlay cards and baseball. In particular, baseball wagers came to about $3.7 million, while parlay bets came to almost $1.6 million.
The Central region followed, with a betting handle of $3.9 million for July. Bettors here focused on baseball and parlay cards, contributing approximately $1.6 million and $1.7 million respectively.
In Northern Mississippi, baseball emerged as the preferred betting category. The total wagers on baseball approached $1.2 million, with the region contributing close to $2.3 million to the state’s overall handle.
Retail sports betting in Mississippi generated about $1.9 million in taxable revenue during July. Despite the long-standing legality of retail sports betting in the state, online sports betting remains prohibited.
Efforts to advance mobile sports betting legislation faced hurdles during the recent legislative session. Both the Senate and the House had passed versions of the Mobile Sports Wagering Act. However, concerns about the potential impact on Mississippi’s brick-and-mortar casinos stalled further progress on the bill.
The ongoing debate over mobile sports betting continues to shape Mississippi’s gambling landscape. As it stands, bettors in the state will need to rely on retail sports betting until legislative advancements make online betting a reality.
