A handle of about $34.3 million was revealed in the sports betting figures for April released by the Mississippi Gaming Commission. Comparing this number to the March results, there has been an 18% decrease.
With close to $2.1 million wagered, basketball was the most popular sport in Northern Mississippi when it came to betting. Baseball and parlays were next, with baseball accounting for $0.6 million in bets and parlays for over $0.9 million.
Baseball and basketball wagering were quite popular in the coastal Mississippi region. Bets on all sports totaled over $8.5 million, with baseball slightly ahead at around $8.8 million.
In April, gamblers from Central Mississippi wagered $2.9 million on parlays and $2.3 million on basketball. With a combined contribution of around $23.6 million to the handle, Coastal players dominated the state overall.
Statewide retail sports betting produced nearly $3.1 million in taxable revenue in April. Despite the legality of retail sports betting for several years, mobile sports betting remains illegal in Mississippi. Legislative efforts to pass the Mobile Sports Wagering Act stalled due to concerns about the impact on brick-and-mortar casinos. Both the Senate and the House had versions of the act, but negotiations did not advance the bill.
The Mississippi Gaming Commission highlighted, “The numbers reflect regional preferences and the overall trend in sports betting activities.” This statement underscores the varied betting patterns across different parts of the state.
As the legislative session concluded without progress on mobile betting, the future of online sports wagering in Mississippi remains uncertain.
