As of December 2023, Mississippi still forbids internet sports betting; bets are only accepted at casinos with a license. Although sports betting in person was first legalized in 2018, the state is currently considering changing the law to include internet wagering.
The Mississippi Gaming Commission’s executive director, Jay McDaniel, is looking forward to legislative talks in the next session. He said, “I expect you’ll see at least bills be introduced every year.” While pointing out that there have been legislation introduced continuously since 2018, McDaniel also stresses the necessity for these measures to get past committee deliberations and onto a floor debate.
McDaniel agrees that switching from in-person to online sports betting might result in more income. The state may see an increase in tax income as a result of this change. He does, however, stress the significance of determining if the income boost would exceed any possible drawbacks for the current gaming environment.
“I think there’s little doubt that we would see an increase in revenue, which would ultimately increase tax revenue. The question is, how much would that be and would that increase be worth any negative impact that it might have on our current gaming environment?” McDaniel stated.
The Mississippi Betting Task Force was established to manage the difficulties associated with the possible legalization of online sports betting. The task force met several times throughout the course of the year to talk about different topics pertaining to internet gambling. By December 15, 2023, their thorough findings should be assembled and presented to the Legislature in a report.
“A variety of different topics were discussed that compiled those findings. Those will be submitted in a report to the Legislature, and I think what the Legislature will see some of those benefits that mobile wagering could bring to the state, as well as some of the concerns that might be there,” McDaniel added.
According to McDaniel, the task force’s recommendations will be included in any legislation that is proposed in the legislature. The purpose of this strategic approach is to take into account both the possible advantages and drawbacks of legalizing online sports betting in Mississippi.
