Michigan Orders BetNow To Stop Illegal Gambling Operations

Share

The Michigan Gaming Control Board (MGCB) has issued a cease-and-desist order against BetNow.eu, an offshore sportsbook, casino, and racebook, for operating illegally in the state. The site offers casino games, sports betting, and horse race wagering without a Michigan license.

The MGCB found that BetNow violated multiple state laws. Under the Lawful Internet Gaming Act, only Michigan-licensed commercial and tribal casinos can offer online gambling. The Michigan Gaming Control and Revenue Act classifies unlicensed gambling as a felony, carrying penalties of up to 10 years in prison, fines of up to $100,000, or both. The Michigan Penal Code also prohibits betting on uncertain outcomes with financial stakes.

Henry Williams, MGCB’s executive director, emphasized the risks posed by unauthorized gambling. “This unlicensed operator not only violates Michigan law but also exposes consumers to significant risks,” he said. “Our job is to protect Michigan residents by ensuring that all online gambling is conducted legally and responsibly.”

BetNow accepts deposits through multiple payment methods, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Zelle, Apple Pay, Google Pay, PayPal, and various cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, and Bitcoin Cash. However, the platform requires players to wager their full initial deposit before allowing withdrawals, a condition that may put consumers at a disadvantage.

The company has 14 days to shut down its Michigan operations. If it fails to comply, the MGCB may take further legal action through the Michigan Attorney General’s Office.
